Kai make: low tide
One of our favorite activities is exploring the tide pools at Puako searching for curious creatures like brittle stars and collector urchins.  Or try the beaches just south of Kawaihae, all a short drive from Hale Pueo Kea: Hapuna for big waves, Waialea with its shady trees to sit under and brilliant blue water like a travel poster, or either beach at the Mauna Kea Hotel, you don't have to be a guest.  Watch whales at Kapa'a Park or Mahukona--go early and bring a cup of Kona coffee.
